A morning at Larch

From the yurt door to pickup

The rhythm stays the same all year, and the weather changes everything inside it.

  1. Preschoolers in rain jackets looking at a puddle
    01

    Arrive and layer up

An adult greets each child at the yurt door and signs them in. Children put on their layers, and everyone has a look at the sky.

    • Signed in at the door

    • Help with boots and mittens

  2. Six children in rain jackets walking a woodland trail with a male teacher
    02

    Walk to the day's spot

We walk together, with an adult at the front and one at the back, to the log circle, the meadow edge or the creek bank.

    • A headcount at every stop

    • Children learn where we wait

  3. Four children stirring pots at a mud kitchen as a teacher accepts a mud pie
    03

    Play and projects

Mud kitchen, stick dens, a log to balance on and a bug to look at. Teachers follow what the children are drawn to and bring tools and words.

    • Open-ended play, a few children at a time

    • Real tools, with an adult close

  4. Six children on log stumps listening to a teacher holding a pinecone
    04

    Snack, story and song

Hands washed, snack from the pack, then a story or a song on the stumps. Quiet time comes back after a busy stretch.

    • Snack at the log circle

    • A story and a song to end the circle

  5. A teacher in profile pointing at a nature table of acorns and shells while children seen from behind gather
    05

    Back to the yurt

We warm up, change into dry socks and settle in for quiet play. On long days, lunch from home and a rest follow.

    • A heated yurt, for warming up

    • A rest after lunch on long days
