Family policies

What families ask us before a child starts.

Photos of your child

We ask your written permission before we share any photo of your child, on this site, in newsletters or on social media, and you can change your answer at any time. We never put a child's name with a photo, and the photos on this site are examples until we replace them with our own.

When to keep your child home

A child with a fever, vomiting or a contagious illness stays home and returns after being well for a full day. If a child becomes ill at school, we call you right away and ask you to come promptly. A teacher stays with the child until you arrive.

Drop-off and pickup

We release a child only to the adults on the pickup list you give us, and we ask for ID at the yurt door until we know you. Tell us ahead of time when someone new is coming.

Late pickup

Mornings end at 12:30 pm and long days at 2:30 pm. If you are running late, call or text the school so a teacher can stay with your child. We talk with families about repeated late pickups, and the enrollment agreement says what follows.

Meals, snacks and allergies

Families send snack, lunch on long days and a refillable water bottle in the child's own pack. Tell us about allergies at the tour; we ask privately once you enroll. We ask families not to send nuts.

What to wear and bring

Layers for the season, waterproof boots, a hat and a spare set of clothes in a labeled bag. The Outdoors page has a checklist for each season, and we keep a few spare layers in the yurt to lend.

Rest on long days

After lunch on long days, children rest on mats in the yurt, and those who don't sleep have a book or quiet play. Send a small blanket if your child likes one.

Closures for weather and holidays

We close for winter and spring breaks and the usual holidays, and we share the year's closures at the start of the school year. If a storm or a power outage closes the school, we email and text families early in the morning.
